After coming closer than it would have liked to getting edged out of the top spot last week, Avatar dropped only 10% from last week to earn $68.3 million and firmly held on to number one for the third week in a row, almost doubling that of Sherlock Holmes ($38.3 million).
Actually, the top films remained unchanged from last week with Alvin and the Chipmunks ($36.6 million), It’s Complicated ($18.7 million) and The Blind Side ($12.6 million) rounding out the top five.
But the big news this week is Avatar crossing $1 billion worldwide grosses. Only five films have made that much money ever at the box office: Titanic (1997), The LOTR: The Return of the King (2003), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006), The Dark Knight (2008) and now Avatar.
Not impressed? Avatar did it in 17 days. Still not impressed? The last movie to accomplish this, The Dark Knight, took over six months to get there.
Before its release, so much was made of Avatar’s overinflated budget and whether the movie had a snowballs chance to make back even a fraction of it. Now it seems that Cameron knew what he was doing all along. Didn’t the same thing happen in 1997 before Titanic came out? We all thought he was a jerk for saying it, but he might be the king of the world after all.
